Information for Retirees on the Web

AFL-CIO. The web site links users to the Alliance for Retired Americans, provides assistance with elder care issues and addresses policy issues at the state and national level. See the retiree section at the bottom of www.aflcio.org .

Alliance for Retired Americans. This 2.7 million member organization is made up of retirees from AFL-CIO unions. It provides fact sheets on issues of importance to retirees such as Social Security and Medicare. Its Friday Alert focuses on political developments at the national level. It invites users to share stories about the financial difficulties with the high cost of prescription drugs so the Alliance can share this information with the Congress. There is also a guide to how your Members of Congress and Senators voted on legislation critical to retirees. The site is www.retiredamericans.org .

American Federation of Teachers. It provides a bi-weekly electronic newsletter with detailed information on developments at the national and state level and frequent opportunities to click on a message to send to your Representatives in Congress. See the retiree section at www.aft.org .

AARP. It provides detailed information on retiree health issues -- such as staying fit, eating well, managing stress and preventing disease — grandparenting, assistance with grief and loss, and financial matters such as reverse mortgages, consumer protection, financial planning and legal assistance. It discusses opportunities for volunteering in AARP programs such as driver safety, grief and loss and Tax Aide. Travel and leisure discounts and tips are shared. Instructional information on computers and technology and a wide range of e-mail courses are provided.

The AARP Bulletin Online provides breaking news with special emphasis on state and local issues and programs, state-by-state guides to nursing homes and HMOs, the ability to sign up on line for do-not-call programs and guidance to pharmacy assistance programs.

It also provides information on how to contact Members of Congress on legislative issues. However, the AARP is strictly non-partisan and the messages are far less specific to the interests of organized labor than those available on the other sites listed on this page. See www.aarp.org .

Social Security. The Social Security Administration’s web site provides information on benefits and benefit payments as well as the opportunity to comment on policy issues and report fraud and identity theft. It includes research and data as well as financial information on the Social Security Trust Fund. Go to www.ssa.gov .
