Senate Passes Measure to End Airport Delays

April 25, 2013, 9:00pm EDT - The Senate passed a bill on Thursday evening to end air traffic controller furloughs caused by the automatic spending cuts known as the sequester that have been blamed for mounting flight delays across the country.

The passage of the bill, sponsored by Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), capped a day of scrambling that saw lawmakers alternate between trying to pass a quick legislative fix for the air traffic controllers' furloughs and point fingers at each other for the flight delays they caused. Full Article>>

TSA Delays Knives On Planes – Flight Attendants Accept Temporary Reprieve For Aviation Security

Coalition of Flight Attendant Unions Remains Resolute: No Knives, Ever Again

Washington, DC, April 22, 2013 - In the face of a huge backlash from Flight Attendants, nearly every other stakeholder in aviation and the public, the Transportation Security Administration today postponed its plan to allow knives on US flights starting Thursday, April 25. But the 90,000-member Flight Attendants Union Coalition, which has opposed the TSA's ill- advised plan from the start, remains resolute: No Knives on Planes Ever Again.

The United States has banned all knives from commercial flights since the September 11, 2001, attacks for good reason: Knives were the terrorists' weapons of choice in bringing down four jetliners and murdering thousands of Americans. All knives should be banned from planes permanently. If the TSA wishes to explore a drastic departure from this logical, 11-year-old policy, it must comply with the rule-making requirements that it should have observed when it first announced its decision to allow knives on planes on March 5. Coalition Of Flight Attendant Unions Calls On Homeland Security Napolitano To Halt Weakening Of Aviation Security As The Country Battles Terrorist Activity

Flight Attendants Express Grave Concern Over Allowing Knives on Planes

Washington, DC, April 19, 2013 - As terrorist activity puts the country on high alert, the Coalition of Flight Attendant Unions, representing 90,000 U.S. flight attendants nationwide, today called on Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to immediately cancel a new policy that would allow airline passengers to bring knives aboard airline flights starting next Thursday, April 25. The Coalition is appealing to Napolitano with the following statement:

“Given this week's deadly terrorist attacks in Boston, this is not the time to be relaxing homeland security rules that protect the lives of the public, airline passengers and airline crews. It would be irresponsible to go forward next week with these ill-conceived changes in rules that were put in place after the 9/11 terrorist attacks for good reason. Full Media Release>>

9/11 Family Member Urges TSA - No Knives On Planes

9/11 Flight Attendant Alfred Marchand Widow And Mother Of Current Flight Attendant Tells TSA To "Think Of The Families"- Keep Knives Off Planes

Rebecca Marchand Meets with Lawmakers Following Boston Tragedy

Washington, DC, April 16, 2013 – The Flight Attendants’ Union Coalition, representing 90,000 Flight Attendants at carriers across the country, released an open letter to TSA Administrator John Pistole from Rebecca Marchand, widow of Flight Attendant Alfred Marchand who was murdered by men with small knives on 9/11, United flight 175. She is also a mother of a current Flight Attendant.

“The attacks in Boston prove once again that we can’t be selective in our vigilance. We must guard against all threats, big and small,” Marchand writes. “As the wife of a Flight Attendant killed on 9/11, and the mother of a Flight Attendant who flies today, I have earned the right to say this: Knives have NO place on an airplane."

Rebecca Marchand is calling on Congress to make sure the dangerous policy change to allow knives will not be allowed to take effect.  She and her Flight Attendant son are visiting with lawmakers this week to build support for bipartisan legislation that will keep knives off the plane. The No Knives Act of 2013, H.R. 1093 was introduced by Congressmen Ed Markey (D-MA) and Michael Grimm (R-NY) last month. Senators Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) have called for a reversal of the policy and last month filed a budget amendment resolution aimed at keeping the ban on knives in the aircraft cabin. Spirit Flight Attendants Stand Unified For Send-Off Event As Negotiators Prepare To Reach Contract

Washington, DC, April 15, 2013 – Spirit Airlines Flight Attendants, represented by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA) will stage a “send-off party” at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport for the AFA Negotiating Team. Dozens of Spirit Flight Attendants will assemble as Flight Attendant union representatives depart for contract negotiations with management April 16-18.

“It is well past time that Spirit management recognizes the significant role Flight Attendants have in the success of our airline, particularly in light of our airline’s profitability and expansion in Dallas-Fort Worth, Las Vegas and Chicago. The time for excuses and stonewalling is over. It is critical that management come to the table and negotiate a contract that reflects the contributions of Flight Attendants to our successful and vibrant airline. We are prepared to do what it takes to reach an agreement that can be ratified. It appears management is choosing a path that could lead to a strike. Our strategy is designed to reach an agreement, but if management prefers to disrupt travel for passengers then they have no business running our airline," Todd St. Pierre, AFA President at Spirit.   Aviation Security Hearing

Flight Attendant Union Submits Congressional Testimony On Dangers of Knives In-Flight

Washington, DC , April 11, 2013– The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA) today submitted official testimony for the House Transportation Security Subcommittee hearing on the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) risk based security. Today’s hearing is meant to focus on a “stakeholder’s perspective.” However, the majority members of the committee have failed to include the Flight Attendant experience on the testimony panel. Nevertheless, in addition to submitting written testimony, Flight Attendants will be there in uniform to help keep the focus on the reckless policy change to allow knives back in the aircraft cabin.

“It is critical that we recognize the dangerous scenario of a small knife in the wrong hands within the confines of the enclosed aircraft cabin and closely seated passengers traveling at thousands of feet in the air. This abrupt policy change does not make sense for combating potential terrorist attacks nor the daily disturbances we handle in aircraft cabins that are fuller than ever, while Flight Attendant staffing has been cut.  On a daily basis, Flight Attendants address, de-escalate, and when necessary, direct other passengers to help contain disturbances on the aircraft,” said AFA International President Veda Shook in her testimony. Homeland Security Subcommittee Conducts Aviation Security Hearing Without Flight Attendant Experience

Key Stakeholder Perspective Missing at TSA Policy Hearing

Washington, DC, April 8, 2013 – The Coalition of Flight Attendant Unions, representing nearly 90,000 Flight Attendants, questions the validity of an aviation security hearing focused on the ‘perspectives of stakeholders’ that fails to include the experience of our nation’s Flight Attendants. A representative of America’s Flight Attendants will not testify before the House Transportation Security Subcommittee’s upcoming hearing entitled: “TSA’s Efforts to Advance Risk-Based Security: Stakeholder Perspectives.” The hearing is scheduled to be held on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 1:00pm.

Flight Attendants are particularly concerned about TSA Administrator John Pistole’s recent announcement of a forthcoming policy change to allow knives through airport security for the first time since the terrorist attacks of 9/11. The policy is set to take effect on April 25. Full Media Release>>

In a letter to subcommittee Chairman Richard Hudson, the Coalition of Flight Attendant Unions requested the opportunity to testify on the hearing’s witness panel regarding the critical functions Flight Attendants perform in the day-to-day effort to secure America’s aviation system and the role Flight Attendants should play in the formation of transportation security policy.

In a hearing last month, TSA Administrator John Pistole attempted to defend his decision to allow knives and other dangerous items on board US airplanes beginning April 25. The letter expresses serious concerns about the process used to determine a policy change “without any formal engagement with stakeholders impacted by this policy, including our frontline workers aboard flights, the crewmembers.”

One of the lead co-sponsors, former FBI Special Agent and US Marine, Congressman Michael Grimm stated, “This level of congressional opposition should serve as a wake-up call to TSA. The decision to lift the ban on knives was done without any rhyme or reason and without consulting stakeholders, like members of Congress, flight attendants and air marshals and the general public. Betty Ann Ong Foundation Opposes TSA Policy Change

Washington, DC, March 19, 2013 - The Coalition of Flight Attendant Unions honors our Flight Attendant heroes from 9/11. Thirty-three Flight Attendants were killed aboard the four hijacked flights: American Flight 11, United Flight 175, American Flight 77 and United Flight 93. Flight Attendants from each of the flights relayed critical information with the earliest pieces of intelligence from that day. The first of those calls was from Betty Ann Ong, a Flight Attendant aboard American Airlines Flight 11.

President and CEO of the Betty Ann Ong Foundation, Cathie Ong-Herrera, is the sister of American Airlines Flight Attendant Betty Ong. Through the Coalition, she said, "I read an article regarding the interrogation of a principle architect of the 9/11 attacks, and he said terrorists are trained to take down a camel with a small weapon. If a small pocket knife in the hands of a trained terrorist can kill a camel — they should not be allowed on airplanes." Full media Release>>

  Sequestration and Federal Budget Cuts

February 25, 2013

SequesterDear AFA-CWA Members,

Sequestration, as you know by now, refers to the $1.2 trillion across-the-board federal budget cuts that have been looming over our nation. The deadline of March 1, 2013 is nearly at hand and positive resolution seems unlikely. It’s important that Flight Attendants be prepared for the significant impact the cuts will have on commercial aviation.

We can expect flight delays, missed flights, increased wait times at security checkpoints of up to an hour and longer waits in customs. DHS Secretary Napolitano said, “Reduced CBP (Customs and Border Patrol) staffing would make four- to five-hour wait times commonplace.”

The FAA will be forced to trim its budget by $483 million, mostly through mandatory furloughs among air traffic controllers, aviation safety inspectors and systems specialists.

The TSA will make workforce cuts among federal air marshals, transportation security officers and transportation security screeners.

While no information is yet available as to which airports or flights might be affected, we do know that the greatest impact will be felt at the nation’s largest and busiest airports. Full Article>>

Flight Attendant Union and DOL Acting Secretary To Outline FMLA Airline Flight Crew Technical Correction

Washington, DC, February 6, 2013–The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA) will participate in a media event this afternoon with acting Secretary of Labor Seth Harris to discuss the implementation of a technical correction to the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) that grants Flight Attendants and flight crewmembers the same legal protections under FMLA as employees from other industries.

“Workers should not have to choose between their careers and caring for a loved one. That was the original intent of FMLA when passed in 1993 and, for two decades, millions of Americans have been spared that difficult choice. The evolution of FMLA continues with the recent guidance by DOL to correct an unintended oversight of the original legislation. Today, Flight Attendants and flight crewmembers can finally qualify for essential FMLA benefits,” said Veda Shook, AFA International President. Full Media Release>>

“AMR management’s outsourcing of regional flying is despicable. This is not only a betrayal of American Eagle employees who have given up so much to make our airline competitive, it represents the very corporate hubris that undermines our economy.

“Since American Eagle was forced into bankruptcy, we have been repeatedly told that it was necessary for all employees to share equally in the sacrifice. We were told that we have to lower Flight Attendant costs to be an attractive feeder airline for American Airlines. We negotiated in good faith and were told that if we contributed to a leaner American Eagle, our airline would grow and we would pursue other flying opportunities. Full Media Release>>

Flight Attendant Union Sues Spirit Airlines For Health Care Discrimination

The lawsuit accuses management of exploiting procedural loopholes to avoid their obligation of providing equal benefits to Flight Attendants.

National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month

You Can Help Combat Human Trafficking

In 2009, on a flight out of the Dominican Republic, a Flight Attendant observed the strange behavior of a woman traveling with two small children -- the girl was sobbing, the boy seemed distressed, and the woman appeared to not even know their names. She reported her observation to the Department of Homeland Security which led to a child trafficking ring in Boston where 82 children were rescued.

On a major airline, a Flight Attendant noticed a young girl traveling alone in first class who said “the seat was a gift from a man she ‘met’ online,” as reported in the New York Times. The Flight Attendant checked the records and found the ticket had been purchased through an “unusual email address.” After reporting the incident, the DHS traced the email address to a human trafficker and the girl was taken to safety.

"Around the world, millions of men, women, and children are bought, sold, beaten, and abused, locked in compelled service and hidden in darkness. They toil in factories and fields; in brothels and sweatshops; at sea, abroad, and at home. They are the victims of human trafficking -- a crime that amounts to modern-day slavery,” states a proclamation signed by President Obama on December 31 that declares January as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. It will culminate on February 1 as National Freedom Day.

Perhaps more than any other work group, Flight Attendants can make significant contributions in the fight against human trafficking. Our duties in the aircraft cabin give us the ability to observe, identify and report suspected cases of human trafficking. As this article explains, Flight Attendants are uniquely positioned in the nation's transportation infrastructure to help stop human trafficking.   OSHA Protections For Flight Attendants

OSHA Extended to Our Cabins

November 30, 2012

Dear AFA Members:

We made history today.  Four decades after OSHA was created and safety and health protections were extended to the workplace of most Americans, we have finally achieved OSHA protections for Flight Attendants in the aircraft cabin.

A few moments ago the FAA released a policy statement that extends many of the safety and health standards we already have in our workplaces outside the aircraft cabin.  This is an enormous achievement and it would not have been possible without the persistent, tireless work of our union.

You were a part of making this happen.  For decades AFA has pursued legal and regulatory solutions to extend OSHA safety and health protections to workers in the airline industry.  The roadblocks have been enormous, but our union kept this as a priority and through the leadership and dedicated work of our Air Safety, Health and Security Department as well as the grassroots organizing led by our Government Affairs Department and thousands of your calls to Capitol Hill, we succeeded in ensuring that OSHA standards in the cabin were included as part of the FAA reauthorization bill.  The bill provided a path, but without our persistence and collaboration with these agencies this policy statement may not have come to fruition.  It is our focused and expert work for Flight Attendants that achieved this historical result today.   AFA-CWA Testifies Before Congress on Aviation Safety

Flight Attendant Union Testifies Before Congress On Impact Of Aviation Safety On Today's Travel Experience

Carry-On Baggage Standards Are Key Component

Washington, DC, November 29, 2012 – The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA) International President Veda Shook today testified before the United States House of Representatives Transportation and Infrastructure’s Aviation Subcommittee on the effects of aviation policy and regulations inside the aircraft cabin.

“The skies are safer today than they were before September 11th and much of this is thanks to the Transportation Security Administration’s federalized workforce and the thorough security screening of airline passengers, crew, and airport employees,” testified Shook. “Federalizing airport screening has improved the security of air travel, making Flight Attendant jobs and passenger travel safer today. Additionally, by applying appropriate screening levels to low-risk travelers, the experience of all travelers has continued to improve. The Known Crewmember Program (KCM) is yet another example of a successfully implemented TSA program that creates shorter lines, thus improving the passenger experience. Today, Flight Attendants at all types of carriers – legacy, regional and niche – are participating in KCM with huge success.” Full Media Release>>

Thanksgiving Message From AFA-CWA International Officers

November 21, 2012

Happy Thanksgiving from AFA International Officers

Dear AFA Member,

This Thanksgiving holiday, we are grateful for each and every one of you who makes up our AFA family of Flight Attendants. It used to be that we would all brace for the full airplanes that marked holiday travel, but that now seems to be the norm for us as capacity has been cut and our planes are fuller than ever. Even so, there is a different spirit with the occasional traveler and families who are flying to spend time with loved ones. And with late breaking news that our country played a critical role in negotiating a ceasefire in Gaza, we are grateful for the positive step for world peace and the safer passage for those flying partners who have been working in this region.

This weekend reminds us that Thanksgiving Day is one of America’s most widely celebrated holidays. Those of all faiths, beliefs and backgrounds sit together and enjoy family and friends around the table on this special day. Thanksgiving is an opportunity to be grateful for each other, respect our differences and celebrate our diversity. Read More>>
