 LABOR 2008

Labor 2008This year, union members across the country took part in the recent election like never before. In dozens of states, union activists participated in a program called Labor 2008 which reached out to local union members regarding the importance of the election. By discussing national and local issues, Labor 2008 ensured that workers understood how the election could impact their lives for years to come. AFA-CWA is proud to have had an army of activists participating in Labor 2008 and educated union members on behalf of flight attendants. More>>

MIDWEST FLIGHT ATTENDANTS FIGHT AGAINST OUTSOURCING

In July, when oil prices drove Midwest Airlines to the brink of bankruptcy, management announced their plan to outsource over half of Midwest flight attendants and demanded steep concessions from those who remained. Despite ongoing discussions, Midwest management has remained steadfast in the proposed cost saving which includes up to 30 percent in wage cuts and drastic reductions to many other areas. By outsourcing 75% of flying to other airlines, most Midwest flights will be operated by non-Midwest employees. By the end of this year, management hopes to furlough over 300 flight attendants.

 POSTCARDS FROM THE FAA

Certificate Updates / Fatigue Study

Federal Aviation AdministrationThe FAA's Civil Aviation Registry is responsible for the database of flight attendant certificates. They are currently updating/verifying their database records for approximately 60,000 randomly selected flight attendants. If you receive a postcard from the FAA - Civil Aerospace Medical Institute, please complete the card and return it immediately. Do not throw it away.

Of the 60,000 flight attendants that receive the postcard, the FAA Flight Attendant Certificate Registry will then be used to randomly select 30,000 flight attendants to participate in the upcoming Flight Attendant Fatigue Survey.

AFA-CWA has been very active in the funding and development of the survey to address flight attendant fatigue. This flight attendant fatigue survey is one part of our important ongoing efforts to improve duty and rest provisions for all flight attendants and enhance safety.

Even if you have not received the postcard, you can update your information electronically by clicking here .

Thank you for your participation in our ongoing effort to fight fatigue and improve aviation safety

 FMLA FAIRNESS

Flight Attendant FMLA FairnessFMLA Crunch Time
AFA-CWA's FMLA legislation passed the House of Representatives 402-9 and is now in the Senate here it has proved much harder to bring to a vote. The Department of Labor, the Air Transport Association and several carriers have joined forces to block its passage. Please call our targeted offices which include any Senators not yet on the bill. (click here to view FMLA cosponsor list)

Don't let this victory slip through our hands! We need to flood Senate offices with phone calls from their constituents. Every Senate office, whether a cosponsor or not, must be made aware that flight attendants are demanding passage of this legislation. More Information>>

 AIRCRAFT AIR QUALITY

Aircraft Air QualityAFA-CWA Secures Significant Upgrade to Air Quality Standards

AFA-CWA has been fighting for improved aircraft air quality standards for decades, against airlines’ and manufacturers’ interest in keeping air quality unregulated and as weak as possible. AFA-CWA has been steadfast and influential in an industry standard-setting process overseen by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). While ASHRAE cannot create or enforce regulations, it is the standards established under their purview that regulators use as a primary reference and which airlines adhere to as standard practice. Working with local AFA-CWA Air Safety, Health and Security Committees, we will promote the adoption of these improved standards at each AFA-CWA-represented carrier. Full Story>>
